The Silence That Protects the System

Fostered Weekly Blog Series: Seeing the Unseen

Silence is one of the most misunderstood survival tools in foster care.

People often assume silence means compliance, or resilience, or even strength. But for many foster youth, silence is something else entirely — a shield. A way to stay safe in environments where speaking up can lead to consequences, disruptions, or disbelief.

In Fostered, Jada’s silence is not accidental. It’s inherited. Learned. Practiced. And it reflects a truth many young people know too well: sometimes the system listens only when it wants to.

The Cost of Staying Quiet

Silence may protect you in the moment, but it can cost you in the long run.

It can bury your voice so deeply that you forget how to use it. It can make you doubt your own experiences. It can convince you that your truth is too heavy, too complicated, or too inconvenient to share.

As an adult who once learned to survive through silence, I understand how long it takes to unlearn that instinct.

Why Systems Rely on Silence

Systems function more smoothly when the people inside them don’t disrupt the narrative.

When children don’t complain.

When teens don’t question.

When adults don’t revisit the harm.

But storytelling interrupts that silence.

It exposes what’s hidden.

It gives language to what was once unspeakable.

Breaking the Quiet

Through Jada’s journey, I wanted to show how silence can be both a wound and a weapon — and how reclaiming your voice is an act of resistance.

With love for the child I was — and every child still fighting to be seen,
